The Navigation Centers are an innovative program designed to shelter people experiencing homelessness and to provide on-site access to social services, healthcare, and long-term housing. The centers employ rapid construction of temporary structures on underutilized properties around San Francisco. Temporary structures are connected by raised decking with services running below, allowing for quick construction and the potential for reuse. In addition to rigorous requirements for program, circulation, security, and service distribution, the designs aim to create restorative, healing environments for some of San Francisco’s most vulnerable citizens.

The Bryant Navigation center uses all modular trailers arranged as a village around outdoor courtyards for gathering, socialization, and interaction. The main design challenge was fitting the extensive programmatic requirements in a small and irregularly shaped site while meeting fire separation requirements and setbacks from the neighboring freeway and freeway onramp.
