The Mission Branch of the San Francisco Public Library is a historic landmark constructed in 1914 and renovated in 1997. The new renovation and addition aims to reintroduce key historic elements that were removed in the previous renovation while also bringing the library into the 21st Century by adhering to the guiding principles of transparency and ease of wayfinding, flexible and adaptable building design, and multifunctional community program areas. In order to accommodate the required program, a two story addition with a new basement is proposed along the two secondary facades.
The project used an integrated design approach to sustainability, with LEED consultant ARUP and in-house Engineers collaborating from schematic design. The proposed design is zero carbon, leverages solar energy and battery storage for resiliency, and is rated LEED gold.
